Constructed between 1886 and 1894, the bridge is a notable example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture designed by Horace Jones. It functions as both a bascule and suspension bridge, allowing the roadway to lift for river traffic. The structure reaches a height of 65 meters and spans the River Thames.
The bridge includes elevated pedestrian walkways with glass floors that provide panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape. It also houses the Victorian Engine Rooms, which exhibit the original steam-powered mechanisms that once operated the bascules. The bridge features a dedicated exhibition space detailing its engineering and history.
The site is wheelchair accessible and serves as a significant monument and viewpoint within the city. It is open to the public as a tourist attraction and includes a museum component that highlights its historical and architectural importance.
