The basilica is a multi-layered archaeological complex that includes remains from a 1st-century Mithraic temple beneath the current church structure. It was established as a minor Roman Catholic basilica in 1084 and showcases remarkable mosaics, medieval frescoes, and elements of Romanesque architecture.
This religious site integrates architectural and artistic details from different historical periods, including early Christian worship spaces and medieval modifications. The church was designed in part by Carlo Fontana, an architect known for his work in Romanesque architecture.
The basilica remains an important cultural heritage site that preserves ancient and Christian history through its underground levels and historical artworks. It is accessible for exploration, providing insight into Rome's layered historical and religious development.
