Originally constructed around 1545 as a hunting lodge for François I, this Renaissance château has undergone various transformations over five centuries. Classified as a historical monument since 1840, the building serves as a significant example of Renaissance architecture and art. One of its notable interior features is the Cabinet des Grelots, which contains intricate wood paneling dating back to the 16th century.

The castle is most famous for its Galerie des Illustres, a unique collection of 327 portraits depicting famous individuals from French and European history. This extensive gallery was significantly developed by Paul Ardier, a former owner who contributed much to the castle's current appearance. The collection provides a visual journey through history from the 15th century to the present day.

The estate encompasses a 40-hectare landscaped park, which is listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Monuments. Within these grounds lies the Jardin des Portraits. The castle remains a private residence, inhabited by the same family since 1926, but is open to the public. Guided tours are available to provide historical context regarding the site's legacy.
