Originally established as a fortification in the 10th century, this site evolved from a royal fortress into a ducal residence during the 14th century. Throughout its history, the structure has served diverse purposes, including a governor's seat, a Protestant stronghold, army barracks, and a state prison.

The interior contains extensive collections across several disciplines, including decorative arts, fine arts, ethnology, archaeology, and natural sciences. Specialized sections are dedicated to toys and figurines as well as the history of equestrianism.

Positioned on a rocky plateau, the complex was acquired by the city in the 20th century. The displayed items highlight the region's history, with a notable emphasis on horse-related artifacts. The site is open to the public for exploration of its historic architecture and galleries.
