The site features a transition between a fortress and an urban palace, showcasing both Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. Originally a fortress dating back to the 10th century, the current structure was reconstructed in 1450. It is distinguished as the only castle in the region built directly upon the riverbed, situated at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers. The building was classified as a national historic monument in 1862.
Since 2016, the building has functioned as a museum of contemporary art. It preserves the world's largest collection of works by the Art & Language movement, who were pioneers of conceptual art. The collection focuses on radical conceptualist works, blending historical architecture with modern artistic expression. The site has also served as inspiration for historical figures, having been immortalized in the works of author Alexandre Dumas and painter J. M. W. Turner.
The castle is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. The avant-garde architecture of the 15th-century palace remains a significant landmark within the cultural landscape. The museum is open to the public, offering a permanent display of its contemporary collections within the restored historical rooms.
