The mosque was built between 1550 and 1557 by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan under the commission of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. It features a massive central dome reaching a height of 53 meters and exemplifies classic Ottoman architectural style with intricate Iznik tiles and symbolic elements.
The complex includes several auxiliary buildings such as a medresa (Islamic school), a hospital, a library, tombs, and baths, reflecting its role as a multifunctional religious and social center. It is recognized as a significant cultural and historical site illustrating Ottoman religious architecture and urban planning.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mosque remains an active place of worship for Sunni Muslims and a prominent cultural landmark. It is wheelchair accessible and free to enter, emphasizing its openness as a place of worship and heritage.
