The building is a historic neo-gothic Catholic church designed by Joseph-François Mangin and completed in the early 19th century. It formerly served as the seat of the Archdiocese of New York before the current Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Recognized as a National Monument, it holds the status of a minor basilica and remains an active place of worship.
Architecturally, the structure exemplifies Gothic Revival style, notable for its pointed arches and detailed stonework. Its cultural significance is enhanced by appearances in popular films such as The Godfather. The cathedral functions as both a religious site and a landmark reflecting New York's religious and architectural heritage.
The site is open to the public and is located in Manhattan. It is also known as a filming location and a prominent example of neo-gothic church architecture in the United States.
