Constructed between 1810 and 1822, this masonry arch bridge was originally conceived under Napoleon I. It officially opened on April 30, 1822, and was the first bridge built to cross the Garonne River in the city. It remained the sole road bridge connecting the city center to the La Bastide district until 1965.

The structure has been inscribed as a historic monument since 2002. It played a central role in urban development by providing the first permanent link between the left and right banks of the river.

The bridge is currently used by pedestrians, cyclists, and trams. It also facilitates the movement of buses, taxis, and emergency vehicles across the water.
