Established in 1843, this independent higher education institution occupies the historic site of the Darlinghurst Gaol. It specializes in a studio-based teaching model for visual arts, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees alongside short courses. The campus serves as a hub for contemporary art practice, with faculty comprised of accomplished practicing artists.

The campus features the NAS Galleries, which include a dedicated Drawing Gallery and the Rayner Hoff Project Space. These venues host ambitious exhibitions by both Australian and international artists, complemented by scholarly publications and public programs. Annual events such as The Grad Show showcase the work of emerging artists, while the institution also provides various prizes and residencies.
