Jerónimos Monastery

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an outstanding example of late Gothic Manueline architectural style, integrating elements of Renaissance design. Construction began in the early 16th century under the direction of architects Diogo de Boitaca, Diego de Torralva, and sculptor Nicolau Chanterene. The complex comprises a church, cloisters, and monastic dependencies.

The monastery served both religious and commemorative purposes, housing the tombs of notable Portuguese explorers such as Vasco da Gama, as well as royalty. Its architecture features intricate Manueline motifs reflecting Portugal's Age of Discoveries, combining maritime elements with religious symbolism.

The site remains a cultural and historical landmark, preserving significant sculptures, royal tombs, and the architectural heritage of the Manueline period. It is accessible for visitation, representing a key monument linked to the nation's maritime history and artistic achievements.
