Construction began in the early 16th century under the direction of architects Diogo de Boitaca, Diego de Torralva, and sculptor Nicolau Chanterene. The complex comprises a church, cloisters, and monastic dependencies.
The monastery served both religious and commemorative purposes, housing the tombs of notable Portuguese explorers such as Vasco da Gama, as well as royalty.
