Established in 1999, this institution is the first in the Netherlands focused exclusively on photography as an art form. It occupies two monumental canal houses dating back to 1665, which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The museum preserves many original 17th-century architectural details and utilizes light-filled, authentic spaces to present photographic works, distinguishing itself from traditional "white cube" gallery layouts.
The museum contains fourteen galleries that host a varied program of temporary exhibitions featuring renowned photographers. In addition to these rotating displays, the museum maintains a significant collection of contemporary photography.
Facilities on the premises include a specialized photography library and a photobook store. The site also features a canal garden, offering a historic outdoor space behind the monumental buildings.
