This extensive spur castle is among the largest and oldest complexes in Southern Germany, with origins tracing back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Originally an imperial stronghold of the Staufer dynasty, the site has been owned by the House of Oettingen-Wallerstein since 1299. The current structure largely reflects its 18th-century construction and is managed by a dedicated cultural foundation.
The architecture spans several eras, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Notable physical features include a late-medieval ring wall equipped with a defensive corridor. The complex sits high above the Wörnitz valley and historically served as a residence and reception site for royalty.
The castle is open to the public and includes access to the courtyard and various exhibitions, such as the Warnecke exhibition. Guided tours are available to explore the grounds, with special tours available by appointment.
