This glacial lake is one of the largest and deepest in the country, formed by meltwater from a nearby glacier. Its size continues to expand due to ongoing ice melt, creating a dynamic and evolving landscape. The lagoon is notable for its striking icebergs, some exhibiting bright blue hues, and its proximity to a black sand beach known as Diamond Beach.

The lagoon is situated within a national park and has been featured in various films, highlighting its dramatic natural beauty. It serves as a site for boat tours and ice cave explorations, emphasizing its role as a hub for observing unique Arctic landscapes and glacial formations. Wildlife viewing is also part of the experience, reflecting the area's rich natural environment.

The glacial lagoon lies in a municipality known as Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður. Its impressive depth and the continuous influx of icebergs from the glacier make it a significant site for geological and environmental interest. The lagoon's natural features provide a vivid example of glacial activity and landscape transformation.
