Benedictine Abbey, Tihany

This Baroque monastery hides a historical treasure. Do not miss the chance to visit the crypt underneath the abbey - the Hungarian king Andrew I and his son lie buried here.

Although the building you can see today only dates back to the 18th century, the original monastery was established in 1055. That makes it one of the oldest monasteries in Hungary - no wonder its establishing charter contains the oldest documented words in Hungarian.
