Consecrated in 1627, this Baroque pilgrimage church was built under the patronage of Archdukes Albert and Isabella during the Counter-Reformation. Designed by architect Wenceslas Cobergher, the structure is one of the oldest domed churches in the Low Countries and was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1922. Its unique layout follows a seven-pointed star plan, a symbolic reference to the seven joys and sorrows of Mary.

The interior is noted for its dome decorated with gilded stars and a collection of stained-glass windows by Samuel Coucke. It houses the Marian Cycle, a series of paintings by Theodoor van Loon that are considered his finest works and the only ones still in their original location. These artworks and the opulent interior contribute to the site's status as a designated Flemish Masterpiece.

The broader site includes the 17th-century Oratorianenklooster (Oratorian monastery) and the Mariahal. While the current architectural form dates to the early 17th century, the history of the location as a religious destination extends back to the Middle Ages. It remains a significant Roman Catholic parish church and a primary center for Marian devotion.
