1669 Etna Lava Flow

The 1669 eruption is documented as the largest and most devastating historical event of its kind. Beginning in the spring and concluding in mid-July, the eruption was preceded by intense seismic activity and the formation of volcanic fissures. The resulting lava flows buried numerous towns and agricultural lands, eventually reaching the sea.

This geological event significantly reshaped the surrounding landscape and modified the coastline. It led to the formation of the Monti Rossi, a prominent scoria cone. The eruption is also historically notable for involving the first recorded attempt to divert a lava flow.

Beyond the immediate destruction caused by the lava, the eruption generated substantial ash fall across the region. It is considered a worst-case scenario for effusive volcanic activity. The site remains a significant geological landmark illustrating the scale of historical volcanic activity.
