The tower was constructed in the early 13th century by Berbers under the Almohad dynasty as a defensive military watchtower. Its distinctive dodecagonal shape is a notable example of Moorish architecture, specifically reflecting the art of Almoravides and Almohades within the Al-Andalus style. Over time, the tower served various purposes, including use as a prison and storage for precious metals.
Currently designated as a national monument, the tower houses a maritime museum that offers historical insights into the city's military and maritime past. It provides panoramic views overlooking the river and the surrounding cityscape, emphasizing its original function as a strategic viewpoint. The structure’s preservation highlights its significance as both a historic defensive building and an exemplar of Moorish military architecture.
