The transportation hub is an architectural landmark featuring a striking steel-ribbed roof designed by Santiago Calatrava. It functions as a major train and subway station, connecting multiple subway lines and the PATH train to New Jersey through underground concourses. Since 2016, the hub also includes a shopping center with various retail and dining options.
The structure symbolizes renewal and remembrance following the 9/11 attacks, incorporating memorial elements within its design. It serves as both a transit nexus and cultural space in Lower Manhattan's Financial District. The hub is fully wheelchair accessible.
Its innovative and modern design makes it a notable example of contemporary architecture, combining functionality with symbolic significance. The complex integrates transit operations with commercial and memorial purposes, reflecting urban development in the area.
