The basilica is one of the oldest churches featuring early Christian and Byzantine architectural styles alongside Romanesque reconstructions. Its square-shaped layout is distinguished by a historic colonnade dating back to the 1st century AD. The structure includes a remarkable dome and intricate mosaics, as well as the Chapel of S. Aquilino. The architectural ensemble reflects influences on Renaissance architecture and represents a significant cultural heritage site. The building was designed by architect Martino Bassi during later renovations, blending early Christian origins with Renaissance elements.
