The palace was originally a 15th-century castle transformed into a Baroque residence in the 17th century by architect Bartolomeo Avanzini. It features opulent frescoes, stucco decorations, and a collection of artworks that reflect the history and culture of the Este family, who once ruled the region.

Its gardens are expansive and designed in a style reminiscent of Versailles, complementing the palace's architectural grandeur. The site functions as a museum and cultural venue, hosting art exhibitions and providing insight into Italian aristocratic life and Baroque art and architecture.

The palace is part of the Gallerie Estensi network and showcases significant historic artworks and statues. It covers an area of approximately 4,000 square meters and represents a key example of 17th-century Baroque architecture in the Emilia-Romagna region.
