The complex is a large early Baroque episcopal palace that historically served as the representative seat and meeting place for the bishops and archbishops of Olomouc. The palace houses important collections of art, books and music and is noted for its refined interiors, including the Rococo-style Assembly Hall.
The adjacent Podzámecká Garden is a carefully designed Baroque garden featuring water elements, romantic garden structures and varied wildlife, forming an integral part of the ensemble. The combined castle and gardens were inscribed by UNESCO in 1998 for their high architectural values, exquisite sculpture, paintings and applied arts, and masterful garden design.
The site is recognised as an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European Baroque princely residence and its gardens, and is listed among national and international heritage registers.
