The fortress is located on the highest point of the city and has origins dating back to Roman times, having been rebuilt by various rulers including Christian and Arab authorities. It features prominent Renaissance architectural style and has played a significant role throughout Spanish history, including during the Spanish Civil War. Currently, the building houses the Spanish Army Museum and the Regional Library of Castilla-La Mancha, serving as an important cultural and historical institution. The site is recognized as a national monument.
