The site originated as a Carthusian monastery founded in 1334 and was converted into a monumental cemetery in 1801. It is recognized for its rich collection of historic tombs, including graves of prominent figures, and its distinctive art Nouveau monuments. The complex also houses an Etruscan archaeological collection, contributing to its cultural and historical importance. Designed and enriched by architects such as Angelo Venturoli and Giuseppe Tubertini, the cemetery combines religious, artistic, and architectural heritage within a large area. It functions as a cultural venue with guided tours and occasional concerts, highlighting its role beyond a traditional burial ground.
