The museum houses impressive collections of classical antiquities, including ancient Middle Eastern artifacts such as the Ishtar Gate, the Pergamon Altar, and the Market Gate of Miletus. It presents significant architectural reconstructions and sculptures from ancient Greece, Rome, and the Near East, reflecting its status as a major cultural heritage site.
Designed in the neoclassical architectural style by Alfred Messel, the building integrates the Vorderasiatisches Museum, the Museum für Islamische Kunst, and parts of the Antikensammlung. The museum opened in 1910 and is located on Museum Island.
Currently, the museum is closed due to extensive restoration work expected to last until 2027.
