The palace was constructed beginning in 1634 and designed by architect Bartolomeo Avanzini. It served as the residence of the Este Court and the Duchy of Modena and Reggio. The building is a notable example of Baroque architecture with grand halls decorated by frescoes and portraits.

Currently, it houses the Italian Military Academy along with a military museum and a library. The museum exhibits include historic military artifacts and art related to the academy's history. The palace is considered one of the most significant Baroque residences in Europe due to its artistic and architectural value.

Surrounding the palace is a park area featuring a botanical garden. Guided tours provide access to the historic rooms and collections, offering insights into the Este family's legacy and the duchy's historical context.
