The museum opened in 1910 and is designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style by Hornblower & Marshall, Charles Follen McKim, and Daniel Burnham. It contains over 146 million specimens and artifacts, including notable exhibits such as fossils, dinosaurs, minerals, and the famous Hope Diamond. The museum features interactive displays and IMAX screenings, and it is fully wheelchair accessible with wi-fi available throughout. It holds the status of a National Monument and is operated by the Smithsonian Institution.
