Historically, the site is associated with pirate raids. It has gained recognition through literature, specifically as the setting for the fictional town of Vigata in the Inspector Montalbano novels written by Andrea Camilleri.

The formation is designated as a Natura 2000 site and is classified as both a cape and a rocky cliff.
