The structure is a Renaissance castle built on a bridge across the River Cher, featuring a unique two-story gallery spanning the water. Its architecture combines late Gothic and early Renaissance styles, with contributions from architects Philibert de l'Orme and Katherine Briçonnet. The site is recognized as a national monument and is one of the most visited locations in the region.
Historically referred to as the Château des Dames, the property was managed and protected by several influential women, most notably Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis. Their influence is visible in the design of the exquisite gardens and the construction of the bridge and gallery. During World War I, the castle was repurposed for use as a military hospital.
The interior houses extensive museum collections and specific galleries accessible to the public. Facilities include fine dining options and the availability of audio guides. As the second most visited castle in France, the site draws approximately 800,000 people annually.
