Established before the local area was declared a town in 1207, this ferry service has operated for over 800 years. It is based at the Pier Head, a waterfront area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surrounding landscape features the Three Graces: the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, and Port of Liverpool Building.

Operations include River Explorer Cruises, evening trips with live music, and journeys along the Manchester Ship Canal. Combination tickets are available for local attractions such as The Beatles Story and Eureka! Science + Discovery. The service is managed by Merseytravel, with a new, fully accessible vessel scheduled to enter service in 2026.

The site serves as a hub for both public transport and sightseeing. Memorials and public art installations are situated around the operational base. It is one of the most frequented paid attractions in the region.
