The cathedral, officially named Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, was begun in 1296 and features a blend of Italian Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Its most remarkable feature is the massive dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi, which stands as a key architectural achievement of its time. The interior contains important artworks and frescoes that contribute to its cultural significance.

Designed also by architects such as Arnolfo di Cambio and Emilio De Fabris, the cathedral represents a historic building with a height of 114.5 meters and covers an area of approximately 8600 square meters. It holds the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, emphasizing its global importance.

The site is wheelchair accessible and offers free access during certain hours. It functions as a place of worship within the Roman Catholic tradition and is part of the Firenze Card cultural program. Panoramic views of the city can be enjoyed from the dome, which remains a highlight of the cathedral's architectural and historical identity.
