The canyon stretches about two kilometers in length and reaches depths of up to 100 meters, shaped by the river that flows through it. It features dramatic rock formations and a winding river, with a waterfall that can be viewed from a dedicated observation platform. The site has geological and cultural importance and has been used as a filming location for notable productions.
The area is accessible for hiking and sightseeing, although it was temporarily closed in 2019 to protect the environment. Its steep walls and scenic aerial views contribute to its recognition as a notable natural landmark. The canyon is part of Iceland's Southern Region and lies within the administrative area of Skaftárhreppur.
