Established in 1982, this biological reserve spans more than 600,000 hectares within the Amazon biome. It protects important várzeas of the Guaporé River basin and is recognized for its ecological significance and diverse habitats, including dense forests and wetlands. The reserve is home to several protected and endangered species such as the black spider monkey, giant otter, marsh deer, and jaguar. It is part of Brazil's federal conservation units and plays a critical role in preserving Amazonian biodiversity and pristine ecosystems.
